Tanawat and Alberto: A Love Story Ready to Become a Family

Tanawat and Alberto describe themselves as excited and a little nervous, which feels about right for anyone standing at the start of parenthood. They are ready to become dads, and they are inviting their community to walk the next stretch of the road with them.

A meeting that almost didn't happen

Tanawat was born and raised in Thailand. Alberto was born and raised in Mexico. In 2018, when Tanawat first started flying with American Airlines, he was scheduled to work a trip to Cancun. At the last minute, he was reassigned to Guadalajara, a city he knew very little about.

On the day he was returning to the United States, he met Alberto at the boarding gate. They talked for a little while. It was a simple meeting, they say, but something about that moment stayed with both of them.

What followed was a long-distance relationship built across countries and borders, year after year, through the ordinary challenges of distance and life. During the COVID pandemic, they got married and kept building a life together.

A home already full of love

Today their home has a cat, a dog, and backyard chickens. They love traveling, cooking together, exploring new places, and experiencing different cultures. Their multicultural backgrounds are central to who they are, and they hope to pass that same appreciation for love, family, and culture on to their future child.

Now they feel ready for their family to grow. They are beginning their surrogacy journey with the dream of welcoming one child, and raising that child in a loving, supportive, and happy home.

Why the cost is so heavy

As Tanawat and Alberto put it, surrogacy is a beautiful journey, but it is also an expensive one. Between medical expenses, fertility treatment, embryo creation, legal fees, agency and surrogate expenses, and the other costs that arrive along the way, the financial commitment is far more than they can manage on their own.

That is true for so many families who come to family building through IVF, surrogacy, or adoption. These paths ask for enormous emotional courage, and then they ask for money on top of it, often all at once and often before anything is certain. Hope alone does not cover an invoice. That is exactly where a community can step in and carry part of the weight, so that a family's ability to grow is not decided by what happens to be in their savings account.
